I kind of hate how /jp/ mangled "Grimdark" definition to mean anything that's not a high saccharine world with cute girls squealing "Kimochii" at each other.

Gensokyo is not Grimdark. Only it's not the high-saccharine world people imagine it is after seeing IOSYS clips. It's something more like Kino's Travels, for example.

Eh, you have the right idea, but I personally compare touhou more to the Super Mario series both in spirit and vagueness. Dark concepts like death(boos) and conquest(koopa invasions) exist, but they're not really shown or at least shown in a light-hearted manner.
