I have to agree, and I'm one of those rabid fanboys.
For the whole manga, Unohana Retsu was my favourite Shinigami mostly because she was this kind of Jedi Master figure among clowns, bloodthirsty killers and mad scientists, then the Data Book came with her obscenely high stats. There had to be a reason for them, but I would've never guessed that it was THIS.
Also, if Tite Kubo killed her like that (as in, two chapters, one-scene-wonder just to give a boost to Zaraki), I'm going to curse him to death.
I stopped following Bleach after the beginning of Fake Karakura, but the issue where Unohana fights, that I'll buy and treasure.
