There's a donation drive over on shoryuken.com: [link] to get the 8th game on the EVO lineup. All proceeds go to breast cancer research and the game with the highest donations makes it to EVO. I'm personally supporting Skullgirls as a win for Skullgirls is a win for indie developers. Plus, it was made by people from the community, so +1! Please donate to Skullgirls and breast cancer research here: [link]

There's been streams with voice actors and such all week on twitch.tv so if anyone's interested, search around. The drive ends as soon as it hits February 1st so donate fast!

Super Street Fighter II Turbo is in the lead with $34,465.00, Melee is at $34,358.33 and poor underdog Skullgirls is at $29,560.00. Here's to hoping.

ST backers went on a spending spree yesterday. I imagine they're not done, either.

    Well, looks like we couldn't do it after all ;_;
    Smash: $94'683
    Skullgirls: $78'760

At least a lot of money was raised for breast cancer research.

Isn't Brawl already in EVO? Why should an older version of the same fucking game trump something different?

Because a lot of the "hardcore" Smash Bros players would rather cut off a finger than play Brawl. I don't really get it, but apparently there's tons of nerd rage about Brawl being unbalanced and such. Which doesn't really seem like that much of a problem since they only play with Fox and Marth with the items turned off anyway, but that's competitive fighting gamers for you.

You sure it's not about the people who lived and breathed all the exploits and glitched that were in Melee and fixed in Brawl? Since all the SHFG players were so up in arms that they were addressed, some of them actually hacked the Brawl engine and added them back in for their shitty illegal tournis?

Could be, I've honestly never really understood the competitive Smash Bros players. While I've played hundreds of hours of SSBM, I'm one of those supposedly "casual" people who like to have items and more than two characters.

I dunno, I'm a casual player, too, but I kind of ran out of enthusiasm for the series with Brawl.

In the original, I learned Samus. Then Melee came out, and Samus was basically nerfed by making everything she did relatively slower, and I wound up learning Shiek as well as my best character for competitive play. Then Brawl came out, and they both got nerfed to Hell, and I'd have to really start learning a whole new character who wasn't utter crap unless I could manage transformations all the time.

... So I just got tired of the series.

I'm one of those weird people who always play as many characters as possible, so nerfing and changes in balance rarely bother me personally. The result is that I never get really, really good at any particular character and I will usually get my ass kicked by those who stick to just one, but I enjoy the variety.

Well, the thing is, you train at the way the game is, and get better at it, and it's like an investment. (Like with Magic The Gathering cards - the more you own, the more you don't want to walk away from your investment in the game.)

I learned in Melee by playing against my brother this incredibly intricate set of tricks-and-counters because I would often play as Samus or Shiek, and he'd always counter Shiek with Marth. I could move fast enough to chain hits together and get quick kills as Shiek. He could stop me from getting any momentum by keeping me at range with wide swings, or through the counter. Hence, I spent most of my time tricking him into using the counter at the wrong time so he was vulnerable.

... Then you play a game with a new ruleset, and it's like all those thousand hours you spent learning to get good are now useless. It's like a new version of Magic came out, and none of the old cards are any good, all your old deck's cards are completely useless, you have to start over from scratch. Or, it's like losing the save on a RPG you spent 200 hours on... Everything you built up and invested in is now thrown away.

It's just thoroughly demoralizing to lose the fruits of all that effort. (That's why Street Fighter is basically the same game it was nearly 20 years ago.)

Still doesn't excuse Melee being added to Evo while Brawl is a superior game that requires technical skill and not extensive exploit/glitch abuse.

I'm not saying it does, I certainly think having one game of the series expresses the will of the fans clearly enough, as well.

It's just that there's a reason why people would get put off having to re-learn everything again from scratch when they put in a lot of effort into learning those exploits. Besides which, "exploit abuse" and "technical skill" mean the same thing, (learning how to maximize your chances for success as its rules are laid out,) it's just that one is said with derision. Remember that combos and cancels were all just exploits when they first were put into Street Fighter II, and they became a staple of the genre.

I got sick of all the Final Destination BS, too, and got put off from playing Brawl because of that, but Melee put me off even more because it just plain felt like an alien game and there was still all the hypercompetitivity, anyway.

Brawl has tripping and other randomness, though.
They really went out of their way to make it non-competitive.
So the Smash players modded the game to feel like Melee.

    Kinda sad, really.
*edit* Brawl was only at Evo once.

One of the reasons they play with items off is so that random crates won't spawn on top of you, explode and instantly kill your character while the other guy is snoozing half a screen away from you.
Melee players hate Brawl because the makers actively tried to make it a party game by removing the glitches they loved to exploit for better character movement, the fact that they introduced random tripping mechanics that can kill any momentum you have going on and that they reduced hit-stun to remove all kinds of combos that were possible to do in Melee. And yeah, Brawl was only at EVO once and the Smashers hated it because they couldn't use their own tournament rules.

I'm kinda salty Skullgirls didn't make it over Melee, but they made a great effort to get their game in, so I hope they're shown some respect when they show up.

As someone who doesn't play Smash Bros. competitively at all (but loves the series), who doesn't use the stupid exploits/cheats and uses at least half the cast instead of one OP character, seeing Smash Bros. players hate on Brawl makes perfect sense to me.

While Brawl did fix up a lot of things and made the game slightly more balanced (that isn't saying much though lol), they completely butchered the gameplay. Slower and dumbed down for casual gamers, random tripping (really? Who's bright idea was that?) and even more luck-based items, and the fucking smash ball are some of the reasons why I much prefer Melee. Its far from perfect, but Melee's gameplay and combat is fast and smooth, while Brawl's is slow and clunky.

    Just a humble opinion.
