Looking at the second panel, he's using a wooden mallet on a sawhorse... Seems a little Schizo Tech for a space-faring race.

Would be if he had any connection to the space-faring society that built the ship, but between that and the only society that he can access barely tolerating his presence at all, kid's gotta make do.

It's Schizo and/or outright magic because a wooden mallet works when creating a gladius from what is presumably scrap metal. Normally you'd need, you know, at least a furnace or something to heat the metal up if you're going to pound it into shape. (Presumably something a little less "melt it to slag" than the rocket engine.) Otherwise, if you have something already reasonably the right shape, you'd want a grinder to put a proper edge on it, and there would be nothing to hammer when making a proper hilt, just proper woodworking tools, glue and a binding.
