EDIT: She is referring to the Series C note of 1957, which was replaced by the Series D notes in 1984. This would suggest that Sanae lived in the human world before 1984 or around it.

Sanae is probably referring to this 10000 yen note, distribution of which was suspended in 1986.

Wasn't she supposed to be contemporary?

Yes, that's why I edited my translation note.

There is no definite statement on when she lived, and her knowledge about Mecha stems from the Go Nagai series Mazinger, to which the Hisoutensoku bears a striking resemblance. I don't know where I read/heard that she knows how to use computers and mobile phones, but if she lived in the era before and around 1984, that would not be really possible.

Unless the "computers" and "mobile phones" that were referred to were the IBM and Dos computers of the early 80s or that clunky Motorola.

It's possible that she's only seen pictures of the old bill, just like the one NinjaPope just linked to.

Yes, that is true. However, when referring to money, people would usually only really remember who or what is on it when they actually use it frequently. I didn't even know there was an old 10000 Yen bill and barely remembered the name of Fukuzawa Yukichi on the new one. Well, this suggests that I do not use it frequently... sadly enough.

Well, there is a lot of money in circulation. I still come across the older style US bills from time to time, despite the effort to replace them with the newer bills.

For some reason, I seem to remember that Mountain of Faith took place in real time, meaning the shrine was actually transported into Gensokyo in 2007. That's what made me say she's contemporary, but my memory might be wrong altogether.

I never knew there was any such implication.

The music CDs with Meribel and Renko suggest that the current time within the games may be further in the future by several years but not extremely far. Kanako also talks about the outside world in SoPM.

The music CDs aren't really part of the Touhou franchise.

The timeline that you show isn't official. It has good references but it is still speculation at best and cannot be used for anything other than that.

Way I took it, Touhou series takes place kinda-sorta in real-time (more or less), while Maribel and Renko live sometime in the near future (with material implying and TvTropes saying the world went to **** around that time), not clear how far, but TORIFUNE is in space by then.

EDIT: Dangit, I thought I turned on NoBump...

The dates used are directly taken from official material such as BAiJR, so it's pretty accurate.

Accuracy does not mean precision. I wasn't accually knocking the timeline. Just stating that there are still speculation within it. You can go to the references and think about it and still come up with something similar. I know there are some round about dates but those are still speculation since the calendar used is in the form of the modified lunar calendar which seems to have been used by youkai since before the original lunar calendar, which is one of the oldest calendars in recorded history. So you can say the accuracy is there but the precision isn't and when you want to make something based off another both must be present.

Yes! That is the King Shoutoku I know!!
The person on the 10,000 Yen bill!! Nowadays, this would be Fukuzawa Yukichi. But before 1984, Shoutoku Taishi was on the 10,000 Yen bill.
