It's honestly quite a normal thing I see in japan alot as well other asian cultures. One of the simplest reasons being that the couple could have different work schedules and thus different sleeping times. Only times they actually sleep together is when they're actually gonna get freaky.

Also on the rise in America, it's one of the ways cited to help marriages. Something about each partner having their own space they have complete control over.
