You know there is a big hinch that the abyssal ships were based from allied ships... I will wait for more art from this guy.
I was thinking the same until the summer event and some of the abyssal ships for Operation MI. 2 of them were very much like Akagi And Kaga, who incidentally were sunk at Midway.
To be more exact, I'm thinking the abyssal ships embody ships sunk during battle. When ships sink they go down to the abyss of the ocean. After all, it doesn't care who you are and where you're from. The sea will claim you.
There's also the matter of Abyssals having equipment that the Allies didn't have in the war, like better torpedoes than the Japanese. There are many overlaps with Allied military tech, but there are also many inconsistencies that hint at them just being "aliens", or something along the lines of what firefly99 had said.

There's also very clear hints that several of the Demons and Princesses refer directly to large scale battles. Armored Aircraft Carrier Princess is not Taihou, the body shape is totally wrong. I think she represents the Battle of the Coral Sea.
And then of course there's Northern Ocean Hime (Dutch Harbor), Seaport Hime (Port Darwin), and Airfield Hime (Henderson Field), locations where vicious battles took place.
