I think the "price" is basically doubling their consumption.

Kaga always had the highest resource consumption amongst all carriers (in-game), but since practically everyone gets the other 1st CarDiv first, Akagi got the "Queen of Bauxite" title instead.

Is this true for the RL Kaga as well? (Well I feel 'consumption' might be too vague of a term to evaluate for a real life warship, but...)

Actually, it's because once there was this bug where Akagai consumed 10 times more bauxite than she was supposed to consume. The trauma from that bug is why Akagi has the title.

The RL Kaga had a maximum range of 10,000 nautical miles at 16 knots, while the RL Akagi had a maximum range of 8,000 nautical miles at 14 knots, and both of them could carry 91 aircraft, so nope.

...wait, what does that have to do with their consumption rates? That kind of performance in the RL Kaga suggests that it goes through more fuel too, not that it's more efficient.

Bauxite specifically is just to replenish lost airplanes.
Kaga simply has the most airplanes to shoot down.

If you can play the abyssal air bases though… prepare lots of bauxites.

Not really from what I can tell.

There are two issues actually; one is that the 14 knot speed sometimes mentioned is, at best, from before her refit when she had mixed coal-oil boilers, and, at worst, just lazy writing by some writer lost to time who simply took the purposed performance figures for the Amagi and transplanted them wholesale onto Akagi to be carried forth and confuse people into the future. (I suspect this due to the fact it seems fairly preposterous that the two figures should just happen to be exactly the same despite Akagi weighing 5 to 6 thousand tons less then the battlecruiser proposal.)

Regardless if that's true or not the reigning consensus seems to be that whatever she was like before, post refit she was good for about 8,200 nmi at 16 knots. That leads into the second problem which is that, yes, Akagi had a shorter range, but she also had way less fuel bunkerage. Kaga carried about 8,200 tons of fuel oil to Akagi's 5,800 or so. So 40% more fuel, but only 20% more range at the same speed... Using those basic numbers you can make a rough estimate actually.

Akagi (36,500 tons) 8200(nm)/16(knots) = 512(hours endurance) --> 5800(tons)/512 = about 11.3 tons consumed per hour (at 16 knots)
Kaga (38,200 tons) 10000/16 = 625 --> 8200/625 = about 13.1 tons per hour

Just for giggles the other major Japanese carriers (later ships have cruise ranges listed at 18 knots, but that just makes what's below even worse really):
Soryu (16000 tons) 7750/18 = 430 --> 3650/430 = 8.5
Hiryu And Unryu (17,500 Tons) 8,000/18 = 444 --> 3750/444 = 8.4
Shokaku (26,700 tons) 9700/18 = 538 --> 5500/538 = 10.2
Taihou (29,800 ons) 10,000/18 = 555 --> 5700/555 = 10.2
Lard As-- Sorry Shinano  (64,800 tons) 10,000/18 = 555 --> 8904/555 = 16

As can be seen Kaga has but one rival in the Resource Wasting Grand Prix, but then again there's not much that could hope to stand before the might of the Airport Hotel when it comes to wasting good steel.
