  • Among us Ivy Leaguers, Penn's got kind of a reputation. Yes, you know the one, the lightbulb joke one. A bit of that inside joke sort of crept into Pennsy's personality design, and I want to communicate here that I love both U. Penn and the State of Pennsylvania very much, and apologize for any offense I may have caused.

Pennsy, personality-wise, is probably someone you don't want to get on your bad side. Fiercely protective of her sisters with an extremely sharp tongue to match, she's got a temper and lack the willingness to forgive and forget. Forgive, maybe, but she definitely isn't the type to forget any time soon. Compound that with a bit of (rightfully deserved, perhaps) ego, and you can see why the commander might find handling her a bit thorny.

In the world of Pacific, each ship-girl typically appears with a few of her fairies ready to assist her in her endeavors. If an especially compatible young officer is found, he or she may be assigned to the ship girl in question as a permanent advisor/commander. The exact nature of why a bond is important is up to debate, but researchers operating underneath STEC's authority believe it has something to do with the nature of the ship girls themselves....

Given that each ship girl is unique in each instance of a world within Pacific's world design, finding an appropriately matched admiral is like finding a needle in a haystack. Finding someone who'd be able to tolerate Pennsy's temper for long enough for them to see her softer side...

Let's just say, STEC high command considers it a successful month if nothing explosive occurs within her naval bases. :)

This must be Christmas! Thanks a lot for the free pages.

There's a tiny comment though: the New Jersey earned only 9 battle stars during WW2. The rest were from its later career. The Iowas are cheaty like that.

Mahan is a lot more like Kirishima. Pennsy's a little more ... abrasive, to put it gently.

The more I look at her, the more she reminds me of Gustav Mahler.

Author's notes: November: This is probably one of my favorite ship girls in the entire book. Not only was I really inspired when drawing her, but I slacked off for three days after while stuffing my face with delicious Japanese food (laughs). Also, I guess I also like the oujo-type girls... Short skirts, heels, she gives me a sexy and sharp, like an executive or leader type of impression. I'm sure she'd be very good at reading other people in our world~ Morgane (tincancarrier): Pennsylvania is one of the oldest states of America, and Philadelphia is one of our nation's centers of culture, learning, and knowledge. Look into Pennsy's eyes, however, and be prepared to be stand in awe of her. Yes, especially you, little destroyer. Zeroblaze: Surprisingly enough, I was expecting more damage on her in the Pearl Harbor attack. Even without the personality we've designed for her (I think there are plenty of people who'd like it nothing more than to sock her on the jaw), she's likely to be focus fired. Of course, I guess that's the advantage of being a battleship - even if you get hit, maybe you'll still be fine.
Commander. I am Pennsylvania. You should know that I am known as the "Grand Lady of the Fleet." Yes, I'm famous. What, sir, have you never heard of me? I was the only battleship that didn't get attacked much on December 7th. I was also the only ship to mount effective resistance on December 7th. I then served in the North pacific, Aleutian Islands and the Gilbert's and Marshall's campaigns (all with distinction, I might add) before being moved to the Marianas. I sank eight enemy ships in the famous battle of Surigao straits. Okinawa? I was there too. I received my last star there, but I was hit by a freak torpedo. I could've gotten more battle stars, but an elegant lady knows when to make her exeunt. With eight battle stars to my name, I know how to handle myself, commander. Training assignment? Don't even think about it. The boys called me "Old Falling apart" back in the day because I turn out such a large volume of gunfire, you'd think I was going to fall to pieces. In the Guam Operation alone, for instance, I expended 1800 14'' shells, 10000 rounds of 5'' shells, and over 20000 rounds of other ammunition. I destroyed over a hundred targets in that single supporting action. No one can claim that sort of skill - no one except me, of course. Do you understand, Commander? STEC notes: The USS Pennsylvania was not the only undamaged battleship at Pearl Harbor, though she is correct in that she is one of the first to open fire. She is certainly not the most decorated battleship in the navy, however - that goes to respectively the USS North Carolina and USS New Jersey, possessing 15 and 19 battle stars each during the service of their careers. Talented, talkative, and somewhat egotistical, "Pennsy" (as she is known among the ship girls) has a tendency to exaggerate her own accomplishments. Her abrasive personality hides a softer side, however, and STEC notes her selfless support for the mental health of other ship girls in gratitude.
    - Pennsy's name and nickname are both given by her crews on board in history. - Pennsy in history collided with USS Talbot (DD-114). Although Pennsy was just slightly scratched, the destroyer was heavily damaged. (Reference for Poked Line) - As mentioned in the intro, Pennsy's firepower is no joke. Often going home to change gun barrels, bullet hells, etc. are all her signatures. A ship well-received by ground crews. (Reference for Signature Line) - Although US Navy doesn't have a severe disagreement on whether a Battleship or a Carrier like IJN does, but obviously during Pennsy's time, there is notable prejudice against Carriers. The joke is real. In 1911, Eugene Burton Ely was the first pilot to land a plane on a ship, and the ship was Pennsy. (Reference for Idle 3 Line)
