Until now, the only other time I'd seen a reference to this tradition was in one of the original Gundam novels, in which Amuro receives such a good luck charm from Sayla. I'd forgotten about it until it came up again in Kan-Colle episode 3, so I'd never thought to check how legit/widespread the practice was.

Comes up in Grisaia no Kajutsu too (in the VN at least, dunno about the anime that was a train-wreck and gave up watching it.) Amane gives an omamori too Yuuji mentioning that she put her pubic hair inside. Of course that completely defeats the point of giving it to him because the recipient isn't supposed to know what's inside it and never open it but that's by-the-bye.
