(Seriously, what the heck is with this whole trope? Eeegh.)
Given that I just got done scarfing a treat that was made with egg, it'd be awkward for me to criticize a bird for eating its own eggs. But when it's a self-fertilizing warshipbird that just needs to catch fire to start spewing out chicks, it raises some disturbing questions.
