Well... It's just that Kyoto is far from Tokyo, I think you have to board a plane to go there. Of course you can go by boat, but it will take longer.
Actually most people travel from Tokyo to Kyoto by bullet train, since the it takes around 3-4 hours. You might be thinking of Okinawa which is a lot further south if you're thinking of boat or plane.
My guess to why they're shocked is maybe because why would you go all the way to Kyoto for karaoke when you can host it in Tokyo? Doesn't seem very budget friendly
