Actually I've read that the USN had no idea how powerful Yamato was until well after the war. Either they didn't care or the IJN did their job as far as keeping secrets goes. Even the Montana class wasn't designed in reaction to anything. She was simply the next step in the evolution of USN battleships, just as the Iowa is clear progression from the North Carolina and South Dakota classes.
Even so it's unlikely that they would have reconsidered their plans had they known. Musashi and Yamato did very little to invoke fear in the USN during the war. Not at all like how planes and submarines did.

They guessed what her tonnage was (and fairly closely I might add) and the gun size by February 1944 thanks to B-24 recon flights and knew exactly how large her guns were by June of 1944 due to the capture of Yamamoto's former yeoman. See here: http://www.navweaps.com/index_tech/tech-084.htm
