    Hang in There, Kogasa-san 1941

Since I was making a clean install, I couldn't even manage a downgrade!

Even the notepad PC I bought developed a condition in which a little while after it booted up, svchost.exe would eat up 100% of the CPU's power, and it was a pain to fix.

The assembly time itself was actually a bit shorter, but the 17-hour Karaoke happened in the middle of it, so ultimately, that's about how long it took.

I liked Vista after SP2 or so. Certainly more so than some of the issues I saw on XP.

I have had this problem since Windows 8 even on clean Microsoft ISOs. No friggin idea what could be the cause, especially since a fresh installation has nothing beyond the standard Microsoft services and no startup entries.

Been on WinXp for a long time and last few years was on x64 version. I've somewhat forced to move on because software kit was stopping XP support and my PC upgrade. I'm currently on Win7, because I've had hardware issues with Win8 and still consider Win10 "too crude to use".

8000 yen for a laptop? That's really cheap!
I mean, it makes sense that it'd be cheap if Windows 7 is on the way out (as "mainstream" support for it from MS ended about a year ago), but holy crap that's a potentially great deal.

As bad as compatibility issues are, the absolute worst OS system Microsoft ever released is hands down 8. Fucking endless 8. I swear, whoever made the interface for that was a pothead or something. It doesn't even work that great on the Microsoft tablet.

Win10 is worse - it has a lot of driver issues, and it will often install a broken driver as a forced update over a working one. It also installs updates that break other things without allowing an option to delay to them until fixed.

At least Win 8 lets you roll back and stall updates.

I had to vote Vista as Win7 wasn't available.

I had this problem with this tool called Lab View. It's jankky on 8 and isn't supported on 10, or so they say.

I've been doing the same, with the 32 bit version. XP support is actually not dead as a hacked SP4 works. Microsoft, still updates if you pay. What is in the update and if it's worth it IS questionable. My old box I updated to 7 is a stop-gap until I buy a system and get to Windows 8.

I've seen little reason to jump to 10, killed my Surface 3's battery life so I don't know how to respond to that. Windows 8 is great on the Surface. Sadly I feel like its MS's flagship.

Windows 10 Enterprise does allow you to stall updates but from what I've seen, you more or less need to get enterprise to do your job. Drivers, model wise should be consistent from 8 to 10 and maybe 7 as they follow the same API but YMMV.

I've had little problems with the Microsoft Surface Pro 1 and Surface Pro 3. Care to enlighten me?

If you look, you can find cheap deals. I found a Nikon 300mm f4 for $160...

Yeah, but Enterprise isn't available to us peons not ordering 500 licences at once.

The forced updates on Win10 were causing boot loops last year (there were two cumulative updates that I recall causing many headaches), and it will insist in using Windows Update drivers even if they're a six months older than your current drivers... or in the case of NVIDIA, the newer WHQL drivers cause crashes that the older drivers don't - and you get forced into BSODs and TDR loops as a consequence.

It's not gaming ready, and certainly not stable enough for me to use even if they paid me.

And I'm running quite well in 8.1 so far - it's much better than unpatched Win 8.

I happily jumped to Windows 10 when I was offered it, then I quickly jumped back to windows 8.1, after windows 10 deleted all my word documents, pdf files and permanently corrupted half of my files, two of which were reports due into my university that week.

I never knew I could hate an operating system so badly.

Let's just say that I've been eyeing the "free" upgrade the same way a canny youkai fox might look at the bait in a trap. Especially after stories like yours, versus the paid advertisements that pass for blog posts these days.

Now it is easier to see which svchost screwing up with new task manager from win8 onward. But the thing is, even if I manage to find out which one it is doesn't help me. Because apparently it is the friggin workstation that is hogging the CPU.

I don't see what's so difficult about simply disabling the update service in services.msc. Most people don't even know what the hell they are updating for, and update only because 'somebody said to do it'.

I've not used 10 on anything but my desktop but that's good to know there. On the Surface, I disabled that and it left my system is a usable state. Of course a S3 can't game but at least it showed that 10 was a good "concept" albeit, buggy as shit. After that I downgraded and realized if it was shitty on a tweaked 10, I have no hope for the world.

I'll wait when Windows 11 comes out. Maybe then it will be stable.

Wait, why on earth would you use apt and/or yum in Arch Linux when pacman alone is already sufficient enough? That just seems pretty pointless to me.

Also, I wouldn't even think of using Windows 10 if I were you guys. It's cluttered with botnet.

I didn't think you could safely disable that in Win10 without it reactivating itself or causing other issues. Besides, it's awful with NVIDIA cards - not that NVIDIA drivers for the past 15 months have been much to write home about, these days. It's just that they're worse with Win10 than anything, despite it supposedly being very similar to Win8.1 - I miss the days when NVIDIA drivers were more stable each update.

Even in Windows 10 there seems to be a way to prevent buggy updates from being reinstalled automatically: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3073930
This is a bit more work but also less crude than disabling all updates (which sooner or later will be a security risk and break drivers or programs that expect certain updates to be installed).

That said I don't know how well that works because I refrained from updating my own PCs to Windows 10 and only worked with Windows 10 on friends' / relatives' PCs. (Solving issues because the upgrade wasn't as easy and trouble-free as Microsoft wants you to believe)

After reading comment section: is win10 that bad? You giving me impression that installing win98 from CD via DOS CD-ROM driver was less frustrating than dealing with win10's shit.

It's like Windows ME but with fewer ways you can bypass issues with. All because of the way it insists in upgrading - even if said upgrade is broken and it takes MS almost a month to fix things.

And I'm not sure how well that "hide upgrade" fix works, or if it's only a temporary toggle that gets cleared after another cumulative upgrade patch.

I've never gone beyond Windows 7, but mine developed this issue (svchost eating the CPU) right around the time they started pushing Windows 10, even though I haven't allowed in any of the actual Win10 malwares updates. Resource Monitor pins it as Windows Update. Sure enough, any time my computer slows to an absolute crawl, killing the Windows Update service immediately brings it back on its feet.

Running 10 on two work laptops, one desktop, and my gaming rig. Think I've had one system crash once and zero issues otherwise. Beats the hell out of 8 and 8.1.

I'm living with it, since it actually was stable at release unlike Win10. I'm still cautious as fuck with updates, but I went Pro so I can control those with group policy editing.
