Well traditional Japanese beds are hardly thick compared to western beds... mostly because in most of medieval and earlier Europe you'd freeze to death if you tried sleeping on the ground anytime but summer, while Japan.... sure it gets cold, but the houses are built off the ground, which makes a big difference.
