Lots of people tend to forget that.

Though, in her defense, deciding to go home instead of heading to the next (unvisited) Pokestop is probably a good idea. She gets to go home and hatch that egg.

Unless she takes a car/bus; The travel distance still goes up, but much less than walking. Probably because it uses some kind of pedometer system?

Actually no. Based on datamined APK, the distance traveled calculation was made by activating GPS in certain time period and calculating the changes between the two points. The 'Speed limit' actually not 'speed' per se but leaps traveled per gps refresh-so yes you can get softbanned from gps jumping around because bad signal.

She hasn't necessarily just walked 2.5 km in a straight line away from her house.
