The director wants Serena to return in the same way as Brock did, returning to Ash and being a constant companion and they even WANT Ash and Serena to get together.

But from the looks of how the first 5 episodes of Sun and Moon have been, it's obvious to see that Mallow has a thing for Ash, so when Serena appears again they will most likely be butting heads over their feelings for Ash. And I think Lana is coming to as well since she and Ash spent nearly the entirety of episode 5 together.

I knew the writers for the pokemon anime were sadist but I didn't think they were pure evil. It all make so much sense now.
