The American carrier task force composition seems to have a lot of 4's 4 task groups in the task force 4 carriers per task group 4 squadrons per carrier air wing (scout, fighter, bomber, torpedo) 4 flights per squadron 4 aircraft per flight
Of course, this is only an approximation, and the number of squadrons (mostly fighters) increased as the carrier sizes increased.
