Does anything under this meme/parody have to go into these pools? Looks kinda superfluous.

Maybe the meme should have a pool of it's own. I only just became aware it was a thing.

I hadn't seen the tag, partly because I didn't know it was a thing, so couldn't look for it.

And I don't take much account of tags at the best of time, they are or should be just purely descriptive adjectives, not grand storylines. Pools are always good.

Agreed. To me tags should be things that are plainly adjectives or verbs. Jokes and the such like this should be made into a pool, not a tag. But that is just my perception.

The guidelines on pools versus tags are that tags are for things that are objectively part of a post, while collection pools are more subjective. (I.E. "Beautiful smile" is a pool, while "Afterwards they had lots of sex" is a tag because it's an explicit phrase in the text, and "Face of the people who sank all their money into the FX" or "Yamcha pose" are explicit facial expressions or poses.)

Generally speaking, if you see something that looks like a meme, just look for tags you don't immediately recognize. The meme tags are typically longer than the other tag names, so they're even easier to spot. (It's the longest tag on this image, for example.)

Isn't the problem that many of these variations aren't actually making sushi, then? w "Nobody loves you meme" might be better... or something.

Well, while How to make sushi is actually the way everyone knows this meme, in Japan is known and tagged as 「誰もお前を愛さない」 or "Nobody loves you". So I suppose they preferred to stick to the western name rather than PIXIV approach.
