... Going to the store to buy ONE carrot? They didn't need anything else, or even more than one carrot to cook with?
My impression is that they swung by this grocery shop on the way home from somewhere because they decided to have curry for lunch/dinner, i.e. it was on impulse rather than pre-planned.

Yeah, but do you really only buy one carrot at a time, regardless? For that matter, that presumes they had everything else they would need to cook on hand besides a single carrot. Carrots will keep for like a month in the fridge, but you need to buy the meat a day or two ahead of time.

Maybe they bought those other ingredients in a big sale at an earlier stop on their way? Japan does have public marketplaces where you can buy freshly butchered meat, fruits and vegetables straight from the farms, fish straight from the fisheries, and so on so forth.

They aren't carrying anything in the pages before this, so they couldn't have bought anything at a previous store, unless they just dropped their bags outside and hoped nobody would steal them. Besides that, if they were buying from farmer's markets, wouldn't that be where you get your single, lonely carrot, too?
And again, who buys and cooks just ONE carrot at a time? Wouldn't you need at least two carrots even for a single meal?
(It still fits even focused on the "straight guy jealousy" gag - just have them buy two carrots, one larger than the other! I can at least see people stopping at two carrots, rather than one in a single meal...)

Okay, clearly you never made curry before. You really only need, well, a few normal carrots, but that one large fat carrot is more than enough. Also I usually do just buy a few carrots at a time 'cause I don't like carrots and only ever need them when I make curry.
Also, that's an individually wrapped carrot that costs slightly more than a dollar, are you really questioning someone buying just one of those?

Yes, individually-wrapped carrots cost more per pound. That's why you buy in bulk, since they don't go bad for at least a month, and if you're cooking at all, you'll easily be able to use them in that period of time. If all else fails, just make soup stock with them and some celery, onions, and peppers right before they go bad.
If you don't like carrots that much, just don't use them at all. It's not like "curry" can't describe a ludicrously wide array of dishes, most of which don't involve carrots, anyway.
