I wouldn't be surprised if it was someone with a vendetta who downvoted all his comments at the time.

Or he could be wrong, I don't know enough about the subject.

You only need one downvote to hide someone's comment in the past. And comment score was only visible to Moderator and Admin level user back then (unless you used a CSS).
