Why does everyone claim our food is rubbish? Roast beef, Yorkshire pudding, Shepherds pie...they're all yum
I think a lot of it has to do with how much of the food most people are exposed to from a place happen to be the worst possible examples of things. Just like all American food must be either McDonalds or deep fried butter, or all Mexican food is refried beans or Taco Bell, all British foods must be fish and chips from out of a cart that's been overcooked by about 2 hours and has breading supersaturated with grease.

Are you telling me fried chicken doesn't count as "Chinese food"?! (Because every mom-and-pop Chinese place seems to sell that...) Not to mention chop suey...
Although one of my favorites is this one Chinese restaurant that really does try to be authentic (with bok choy and everything!) that has a menu page that says something like, "Chinese classics; just like grandma used to make!" which makes me chortle, because MY grandma wouldn't make anything that didn't come straight out of a can...

I've learned to just roll with it, we're never going to convince the rest of the world that British food isn't horrible.
I happen to like British "comfort" foods, like roast dinners & the like, amongst others. Unfortunately for us, most people only find the "worst case" scenarios to be the "only" versions available. A horror story of the worst examples ,that is blown out of proportions and taken to be complete fact, is still a minority and worst-case scenario.
