And she's a deliberate reference to a very old trope.

It's a dead horse trope to have a beauty who's "hidden behind her glasses", so that when he/she took them off (and possibly also took out the ponytail and took off the paint-stained overalls for a dress) they were an instant fashion model. Thing is, characters wearing glasses were in demand, so they just started making them pretty all the time.
