But it still brings up the question why Taconuts was hesitating to give her a ring though before though.

In most media, giving or receiving a wedding ring before a war is over is an instant death flag. If he knows better, he won't give it to her now.

On the other hand, this is Kancolle. You give your girls rings to help them grow beyond their limits.

I suspect it's more that he doesn't want to give her a ring if it isn't "really" for love... our admiral having picked up a share of protagonist density that prevents him from realizing that both of them are head over heels for each other.

But so is saying "when the war is over..." I think it's just that people who write wartime romances love killing off half the couple, and it's just death flags in every direction.

It's kind of the other way around. You decide you want to kill off a character, and then you need to insure that it has maximum emotional impact because just offing redshirt #318 isn't gonna do squat to the audience's heartstrings, so you need to make sure you spend at least an episode talking up how cool this guy who's totally deathflagged is, and how great his life is and he's getting married and baby on the way and he personally saved a puppy that nobody else knows about and will starve to death without him and so on and so forth so that you expose the most audience gut for your upcoming punch.

This was also the point where gay characters (who of course, HAD to be buried) would suddenly come out as being attracted to the opposite-sex main character in shows like Fushigi Yuugi, where the transwoman got an episode in the sun then "admitted" that "he" was living as a woman all along just because of a dead twin sister that was never mentioned before, and now he's totally attracted to the female lead right before having a heroic sacrifice that saves the team, and by extension, the world.

I suddenly feel bad for planning a few wartime infatuations in my own TL writing (SI Archives, found on Alternatehistory.com) where The Generalissimo's "maybe after the war" is basically "keep trying to impress me in the meantime, young officer (but hahahaha NOPE)".

(BTW what's the feminine form of Generalissimo?
