Not sure; this looks a lot like those Shaolin Monk training activities that are referenced in a number of movies and shows. In any case it looks like Darjeeling is trying to teach Rosehip some discipline and control!
That burning thing looks kind of creepy, I guess due to the positioning. o_O
It is after all meant to ensure she keeps the posture and sear her butt if she start slacking in the knees. She can at least feel the heat rise if she begins to get closer to it before it actually burns her.
