Ah, yes. By the time you figure out how to fix an old laptop, it turns out an affordable and better one was released years ago.

My dad had a laptop that was about ten years old. He insisted it was fine but complained so often about how slow it was that my mom and I just got him a new one for Christmas last year. (Now he complains about the interface on the new one, but at least it's not slow.)
