    Hang in There, Kogasa-san 2893

It's because I'd hardly ever ridden in this kind of Asurada-like switch-started car. :-) Or maybe although I expect I'd ridden in one like this before, I'd totally forgotten

Friends of BunBunMaru News Society is being held today in Kyoto. My regards to everyone taking part!

God damnit, stop trying to reïnvent the car, the old ways worked just fine and most of us know how to operate those.

I had the same problem the first time I borrowed my mom's push-button car.

I believe such cars start the engine by pressing the button and pressing on the accelerator, no?

My colleague's car is like that; when it idles at the traffic lights the engine shuts off. A quick tap on the accelerator pedal and the car jumps back to life.

You hold the brakes. As the comments mention, the solution is the title.

These actually seem to be part of a security system to make hotwiring cars more difficult. Even higher-end cars that still use keys tend to now use some sort of bluetooth or electromagnetic chip in the keys to be a secondary validation, which can unfortunately make it even harder to start cars just because of interference or a low battery inside the key or just having the wheel turned to a location where the detector isn't in a good position or something.

It's also not like there aren't cars with key ignition that don't require you make sure it's in park, you have a foot on the brakes AND you give it a little gas...

In my experience with obsolete car "giving a little gas" is actually helping engine to start up by injecting fuel via pedal (at least for petroleum/LPG engines).
The "brakes" thing is to make sure that car will stay still when you drop park-brakes and shift gear out of neutral.

I don't know about sophistications on brake/gas pedals on modern cars, that really enforces you to do that outside of mentioned reasons.
P.S.: Any car with key start can be modified with push-button start - just a matter of modifying circuits and ineriors for inclusion of button.

After stopping by a glass factory...
    Hmmm...
    What's wrong?
I don't know how to start the engine.
    Huh!?
It starts if you push that button, doesn't it!?
But you started it properly when we came here, didn't you!?
    That's what I'd expect, but...
The engine was already running at the rental agency.
Even if I push it, it only starts electrical stuff.
Should you call the agency and ask?
    Let's see...
