Well, she does have horns, so she's not just some old woman up in the mountains. (Not especially old-looking here, either, but that may be less important.)

Yamamba can be translated also as mountain-hag or peak-hag. Not EXACTLY mystical, as the origins of the myth are supposedly a tradition to dump your elderly in the wilderness so you don't need to care for them anymore and leave them to the elements to starve or trip up. (Although, knowing how strong the shame-culture was and still is, it might have been a voluntary suicide for elderly folk to no longer be a burden on their family. This was seen during clean-up of the Fukushima disaster.)

Supposedly a necessity back then, and the yamamba legend might have been the result of the collective guilt, and that granny is still up there, forced to become feral and eat any passing stranger.
