Pretty much the only characters that have behaved remotely intelligently consistently are Ao and maybe Monme and the mountain witch, here (so far). The whole joke is basically that none of these guys are competent, and it's a fool's parade.

"The Idiot" and the dumb ones are not always the same thing. "The Idiot" is the pranker a lot of the time, or the person that is so easy going that stuff just happens to them. The dumb one are those that just do something stupid or have just short attention spans that they forget about something important they just did. But they aren't classified as "The Idiot"

Shiki = Tsukkomi

Ao = Tsukkomi normally, Boke around food

Mao = FULL BOKE. The Pinnacle of Boke. The unsurpassed Boke. The personification of "Attention deficit Oooh Shiny!" The rival to Cirno in boke-ness.

Youko = Tsukkomi

Mountain Witch = Boke/Tsukkomi at the same time.

Ittoko = ... Do I even need to say it? Boke.

I feel like after having the horn broken the bear might turn out to be the bear puchi yokai from the very first page.

Pretty sure the one you're thinking of is actually a tanuki. Like kitsune, oni and kappa, tanuki are one of those youkai that have just got to show up in a story about youkai sooner or later.

This just makes me think of "The Boke, The Tsukkomi (Comparatively), The Moe Through Helplessness, and The Seemingly 'Perfect' At First Glance"...
