At this point it's less "Is it Lewd?" and more "How cleverly lewd it is."

Not this time, it's just Sazanami smugly attempting to out-explain Hibiki-sensei, only to find out that the phenomenon they're talking about is a total hoax.

Does that mean that cats can't see ghosts?

It's not proof that cats can't NOT see ghosts.

I've never heard of such a Dr. Staden.
    Whaa!?
    This is the Ferengelstaden phenomenon.
The name comes from a thread titled "A somehow eerie phenomenon" on a certain huge textboard. The post talks about a phenomenon where cats would sometimes stare at empty spaces.
The phenomenon is a complete hoax.
According to the hoax, a WWII paranormal scientist named Dr. Staden had a cat named Ferengel. The cat would sometimes look at empty spaces that had a slightly lower temperature than the rest of the room. Since ghosts lower the temperature of the space they occupy, Dr. Staden concluded that the cat was actually observing ghosts. Of course, this is a total fabrication by a user on popular Japanese textboard 2channel. Not to be confused with www.2chan.net which links to Futaba Channel. Yes, the English imageboard 4chan has its roots in Futaba Channel and 2channel.
It says they're looking at ghosts!
The theory is that they'e just listening carefully.
Hah! I know this one! It's the name of the phenomenon where cats sometimes look at empty spaces! The name comes from the research findings of German scientist Dr. Staden, who studied psychic phenomena! Tee hee hee hee!!
