This drawing seems awfully similar to this one.

    http://img514.imageshack.us/img514/1360/1211313877792wq5.jpg

I guess the artist used it as a reference? I dunno.

Good find. Is there an existing tag for artwork like this based on real images (though, I would first check to see if there were enough to warrant a tag)?

i don't know if there is, but what would we use to tag it with in the first place though. i don't think sketch would fit the same way in here to describe it. and realism is a different tag altogether as well.

Even though there is some skill involved in this one, I would suggest the plagiarism tag.

Yeah, despite the negative connotation of the tag, it actually would be fitting here.

    Yes indeed.

Is there some secret behind her eye? I dunno if she's actually missing an eye, judging by her eye patch.

You're asking for one helluva spoiler there. I don't know the full details, but it has something to do with dragon powers.
As a side note, Ryomou would have to be my first stop in a stroll through Toon Town.

Wtf? Plagiarism tag? Do you even know what plagiarism means?

It's fucking common for artists to use photos as reference to their and it's not plagiarism by any means.

Unless you have another picture that someone else has drawn and this is an obvious trace of it, it's not plagiarism.

This really shouldn't receive the plagiarism tag. This is an drawing based on a photo, not a drawing ripping off another drawing.

The plagiarism tag should be redefined to note that it should only be applied to drawings ripping off other drawings, and not those based on photos.

If you wish to note that it relies too much on a photo or similar image as it's base, then use something like non-original, unoriginal, or something else, but certainly not plagiarism

That's usually parody though. Plagiarism_(real) isn't really possible since we'd just tag it with the right artist.

Ryuudesu tagged post #414222 with "reference", which describes the situation without negative connotations. I don't think a "reference" tag would be confused with any other meaning, so it gets my vote.

I'd support it but unfortunately, the word reference refers to the original picture/photograph, not the derivative work.

Actually, it seems we already have a tag for that: reference_photo... Then again, who's to say the reference will always be a photo, I think that tag should merge with reference.

Good point. We could put various originals and copies in a "Reference works" pool, since the main value in pointing these out is to compare the two works. The "this belongs to the 'Reference works' pool" message at top would be sufficient indication. Similarly, we could use the parent/child system and point out the connection in the comments.

Tagging just seems too limited for something that relies on comparison.

That's a good idea actually, I think that solves most of the problems with this tag. Although this brings me back to my wish that searching would also include pool titles... Then again, searching for reference would still come up with search results for the actual reference pictures (which then link to the pool), so it's not a huge deal.

But yeah I agree that a pool, along with a parent/child link would be a good solution, especially since a pool can contain the whole spectrum of images: images that are traced from other images, images like this that only used a reference as a starting point, and so on. Whether or not one is "plagiarism" (or a derivative work devoid of artistic merit, anyway) can be left up to the discretion of the viewer.

Once the pool is put together it might be a good idea to get rid of the plagiarism tag altogether since it's kind of an accusatory tag.

(Yeah, I had a lot of coffee this morning...)

    tl/dr version: cool idea bro

I just noticed the plagiarism tag is removed but no pool created. Way to go.
