... Okay, I'm beginning to see the meaning behind this arc's title.

"Variety store" may be the actual classification of a dollar/100 yen store, but I never hear anyone actually refer to them as such in everyday conversation. They call them "dollar stores", at least anywhere I've heard/seen them mentioned in the States.

Yeah, but that was the best compromise that I could come up with between my preference for translating the term as is, and the more-recognizable-to-American-readers localization. The latter is just unnatural-sounding and doesn't make sense since it's obvious that the characters are 1) native Japanese, and 2) speaking in Japanese.

I'm reminded of the argument that erupted between me and someone else over how to translate 自由主義者 on post #2416123 a few years ago (need to go back and reread that comic, incidentally; I stopped due to the translation having big gaps in it at a later point).

As an American, I would, of course, disagree that the latter sounds unnatural. :-) However, I realize that's more owing to the usage of a specific currency in the phrase. I contend that "variety store", while technically more accurate, sounds less natural in everyday conversation. In fact, i don't think I've ever heard it used in casual conversation to refer to this type of establishment. What I usually see and hear are "¥100 store", "dollar store", and/or "pound store" (or specific chain names, whether meant actually as specific or as technically inaccurate substitutes for the generic term).

I understand your point, of course, but 百均 is a colloquial term equating to the generic use of "dollar/pound/¥100 store", and as ethnocentric (culture-centric?) as "dollar store" might be, I consider it a far more natural-sounding localized equivalent than the phrase "variety store".

That said, I recognize that localization has to have its limits; I'm not going to turn onigiri into jelly donuts, after all. I'll see if a phrasing I feel is in more common usage comes to mind.

Hello there! Who are you, lady?
Sniff Sniff What a lovely scent. Which shampoo do you use?
Um, well... I'm a single mother...
    So you're a special case.
Hello there. I'm Mashiro, a friend of your mother's.
    Hold it!
    Of course.
A cheap one? Then it must be your own lovely aroma.
Okay, I'll be coming over to hang out today, so tell me your address and phone number.
And if you know your mommy's measurements, tell me those too.

    Shy
Look! I made a ring out of a flower!
Then will you be Chiyomi's friend too?
Wow, you're so good at making things, Chiyomi!
    Huh? Uh...a discount store brand...
百均 is an abbreviation ultimately meaning "100-yen shop", the Japanese equivalent of the US "dollar store" or British "pound shop", all classed under the umbrella term "variety store".
