In the earlier editions of D&D (1st and 2nd edition) a roll of 1 would actually be a critical success for a skill check. So there's that at least. XD

But you forget the ever-looming threat of the DM's mood. Odds are you pulled a critical success, but the catch is it works on only one of them and now you'll have to choose. Either option is still a death sentence.
