Gotta admit, while I'm not really too big a fan of the designs for most of the ships in Azur Lane (it feels too desperate and pandering, focusing more on the girls being the selling point than the ships themselves, although I guess that is the point...), when they do these alternate skins it is freakin' amazing.
Like, literal top-tier artwork. If we move away from the whole Shipwaifu thing and just be literal waifu, it really is fantastic.
But otherwise, most of these skins I really can't tell how it works ingame (cause I don't play). Do You just get the skin and lose the whole ship bits, becoming purely girl? Well, not really holding that against them or anything since Kancolle does the same.

A bit of both. They lose their rigging in the Dorm area and presumably in the base generally, but have it equipped when going on a sortie. I guess you can excuse it as a "on duty - off duty" kinda thing.

Yeah, it's implied that the shipgirls can summon their rigging at will. Cleveland can make her rigging disappear with a snap of her fingers in her Gentry Knight skin.
