I think Asuka Langley was the first. Then a long chain of Tsundere characters followed that path.

If I'm not confusing fanon with canon, Asuka loved Shinji first. It was his timid nature vs her overbearing nature that caused the hurt feelings between them.

I doubt this. She's a very proud girl and thinks little of Shinji at first, but he shows his mettle, saving her at least once--rescuing her after she defeats Sandalphon inside the volcano.
