The guy has reached new levels of being either dense or airhead. But for some reason, this doesn't infuriate me like it does in so many other stories.

I think it certainly helps that (so far) there's only one girl vying for his affection, but he has eyes for another. Love blind basically, as opposed to being harem protagonist dense.
