Supposedly their Striker Units require very close contact with their skin to function.

    Anything beyond pantyhose won't work.

They are also required to be ready to deploy instantly at a moment's notice.

No it's never explained in anyway that makes a wit of sense.

Hog-wash as 30 seconds of thought presents at least three trival ways around this:
1- Boxer Shorts none of these come all the way up the thigh a shot set of trucks would cover everything.
2- Skirts worth the name, a shirt of even modest length that fell to a bit above where the striker ended would cover anything. There would also be plenty of chances for panty flashes without the no-pants idiocy.
3- WEAR aforementioned pantyhose since it's completely canon that even those thick enough to be more or less totally opaque are completely viable.

And none of this explains the idiocy of not wearing pants on the ground, more so when walking around in say northern Europe in the spring, fall, or winter. I can almost accept the no pants in the air thing, but I've never heard a single vaugely reasonable argument for lack of them on the ground.

They are also required to be ready to deploy instantly at a moment's notice.

This doesn't even bear consideration I can pull on or off a set of sweatpants in seconds. The three seconds it would take to yank off a pair of pants or a skirt are inconsequential compared to the other delay in preparing an advacned vehicle for deployment. You'd waste vastly more time if the siren came while you where in the middle of taking a dump, or had to get out of a bed, or get on your shoes better not have any toilets, beds, or shoes on base either!

Keep in mind I LIKE the series, but I think it would be better with more reasonable clothing and good old fashion panty flashes rather then this no-pants shit. It really just gives anyone that likes it a bad name and forces them to explain "listen if you look past the no pants thing there's more too it."

It's really like the series is selling itself short by pandering to douchey pervs when it could easily get by on it's own plot and story merits.

But was it ever explained why they have animal ears and tails?

    1. Not in the anime, but it was explained that each girl has a familiar partner and they combine to increase the girl's strength in the graphic novel.

    2. It was explained that females are more potent with their magic abilities than males.

Its obviously just a paper-thin explination to have the show filled with fanservice.

From what I read, they are a physical emobidment of their magic powers, kinda like an aura, which the striker units amplify.

And I guess for some crazy reason only females can have magic powers?

Well they aren't exactly fighting conventional enemies now are they? You might have enough time to remove pants if they were fighting human opponents. But they're not, they're fighting neuroi. In the time it takes to remove their pants the whole base could be destroyed. Besides anime is supposed to be enjoyed not studied. We got enough of that in school.

You did watch the series right? The one where they had like hours of warning about raids and plenty of time for silly antics in the days or even weeks between sorties correct?

So nowadays we don't like fanservice without clear reasons tied to the plot?
There are loose reason to why they do all the fanservicing, and that should be enough.

Or we will begin to discuss anime/manga physics?

Oh ya forgot, been a while since I seen the series, but the weeks in between are cause the Neuroi's raids have been erratic. So ya the early raid warnings are understandable. But I find it funny that you watched the series yet your complaining about it.

Meh. I can't watch an anime without at least a little bit of "man candy". That's why I couldn't get through two episodes of Azumanga Daioh. Only one man, and even though he's funny, he's not much to look at and only a recurring minor character. Similarly, I'm not fond of harem anime. Though Mahou Sensei Negima deviated from the norm, in that all the girls love the lead male as opposed to hating his guts like most harems. But even then, Mahou Sensei Negima was only moderately amusing.

Similarly, I need some females as well. That's why I only tolerated watching Yu-Gi-Oh. And that's why I couldn't get through Bobobo-Bo Bo-Bobo and Axis Powers Hetalia. The first only has four women on the entire show out of countless men. The second only has two women out of a varitable "ton" of men. The other doesn't have any women at all. I may be a girl, but after so many men, you kinda wish something with ovaries and a uterus could show up on screen.

Oh, and for the record, I stand by Robert3186. I can't stand nonsensical fanservice. Every decision or rule has to have an acceptable explanation or reason, or I hate it with a passion. It's the curse of OCD...

It's still there, except now we have to constantly repeat it aloud to remind people instead of having it be a given.

Harry Potter murdered that. Or, to be more precise, his fandom did.

Anyway. They call panty-sized garmets "zubon" ("trousers", which directly avoids the confusion of the word "pantsu"), so those are their pants. The shots of the civilians show that this applies to girls everywhere, all the time.

I guess women are weatherproof in Strike Witches.

Non-witch girls wear regular clothes, with skirts, coats and long uniforms in the novels though.

Wow, the arguments that goes on here. Allow me to throw in these simple words. Mio Sakamoto: There isn't anything a witch can't do.
Also, think of Sky Girls where nano-bots act as a barrier or a protective shield. Can it be said the same goes for their magical abilities? Also, the ears and tails are based off of their familiars which guides them or enhances their magical abilities. So far, only one familiar has been known to been killed. As for why there are more women that men, A: fan service and B: I believe they are civilian volunteers.
