To be fair Ran IS a Kyuubi which somewhat implies that she possess near god-like power on her part.

Naruto's got nothing to do with it. There are a myriad of tales that place all kyuubi-kitsune as the personal servants and messengers of Inari.

You mean a Tenko? Yeh I know but Ran doesn't need to be a Tenko to be considered a Kyuubi. Any fox that's managed to up to gain nine tailes is a Kyuubi.

Usually such fox's also tend be ranked powerwise as being near divine in what they can do.

If I remember correctly, Kyuubi actually LOSE tails in their advanced age, until they get down to just four tails and become Tenko.

exactly, Gary. That's why I said Naruto's made up "folklore" keeps annoying me. They see nine tails and they go "OMG It's Kyuubi" without knowing that the real folklore is different

Depends on what type of Fox they happen to be; there's a difference between say a Youko and Zenko. Some are supposed to actually gain more tails while others remain constant at nine.

A bit on the ranking of Kitsune:

Kyuubi no Kitsune (9-Tailed Fox). A Youko with nine tails. The most widely known is the The Fox with the White Face and the Nine Golden Tales. Foxes with nine tails are sometimes simply called "Kyuubi"

Tenko (Heavenly Fox). A fox who has lived for a thousand years, possessing powerful divine energy and attaining the rank of god. It has four tails, and the ability to see a thousand miles. Its eyes are golden.

There are of course lessor ranks below that of a Kyuubi no Kitsune such as a Byakko, Kinko, and Ginko among others. As well as different paths that can be taken besides becoming a Zenko in some myths.

But anyhow to get back to root of this discussion Kyuubi means "Nine-tails". Any creature in Japanese lore which happens to possess nine tails can be called a Kyuubi (though it's more often applied to kitsune more then anything else). By possessing nine tails Ran is pretty much automatically a Kyuubi.

By the way, mangadaemon, what's your source on this? I've tried to source some of this deeper mythology out at various points and came up dry, so I'm curious.

Does this matter at all? Even Cirno is most likely stronger than the Aki sisters.

Gods or not, they're both pretty weak.

Sorry. I never noticed your question until just recently. But anyway the majority of my research comes the the old fashioned way, a ton of research at the public library on Japanese Mythology, more research on the net, and a bit more time trying to get rid of the headache given how information on the same subject is so often contradictory depending on where the author did the majority of their research.

Some regions will have a creature be fairly benignant while in another area the same being is rather monstrous.

The mythology concerning foxes in Japan is often very contradictory, as mangadaemon noted. It's misguided to say that one is correct, or is the "true version" compared to another.

Some sources say that foxes never change their type - i.e. divine ones are created that way, and earth-born types cannot become divine foxes. Others say that age, honor, and power will allow a youko to ascend as a tenko, or other such things. Some say that tails continue to increase with age, while others say that they increase up to nine, and still others say that they go up to nine and then back down to four.
There's really nothing to say that one myth is more "right" than another, especially considering just how widespread each individual version is.

Small mistake some people make on the tails. The 9th tail appears when they are 800 years old, they start with 1 tail after all and then add 1 more for every 100 years. Just pointing this out to the mistake I've been seeing a little too often lately.
