    4 years after the start of the project, in the early summer when reconstruction was progressing, I found a shipgirl-compatible girl in front of the Sasebo station.
    She was also picked from among the students in the city, but this girl seemed to be a fan of the Self-Defense Force.
    Recognizing me as part of the special agency, she asked me to let her see the naval district, so I immediately took her to the admiral's office and welcomed her.

    If we consider seasonal CG's to be canonical, i'd say it's fair to say the game takes place in modern times.
    But why the WW2 equipment? Shhh it's sparkly shipgirl magic bullshit dont think about it.

    I always felt it was because enough of the former crew needs to be dead to man the ship as faeries.

    My own personal head canon is that the fairies "magical engineering," or whatever you wanna call it, is only up to WW2 style tech. Same with the Abyssals too. Sure, the fairies know what a F-35 is, but they don't know how to integrate it in their own tech to be able to have it come from an arrow or whatever. I always liked to imagine humanity was attacked first, and since the abyssals machinery is seemingly spiritual or magical in nature, no human weapons can harm them. Then the fairies reveal themselves and are like "Hey, we hate these deep sea demons too, you have the resources and we have the technology, let's become allies!" Thus starting WW2 magic shipgirl adventure. That's just my head canon tho lol.
