I finally got around to watching "Das Finale" Part 3, and the disc also has the "Daikon War" OVA. It's an amusing OVA but it gets super absurd, since Ooarai doesn't have any rugged mountains, much less desert with Saguaro cactus, close to where you would be able to see the pier where the school ship parks!

I noticed that the background landscape features moved a lot more quickly as they were riding horseback than one would expect if they were of the proper size. So I think they're probably as full-sized as the castle at Disney World (it's not), i.e. the in-universe designers of the schoolship just made some clever uses of perspective. At least, that's my theory.
