How popular does an anime have to be before its nameless background characters start getting star treatment?

Well, Kyoto Animation seems to be rather good at interesting-looking, distinctive background characters (I've noticed them in Clannad, Suzumiya Haruhi, and others) anyway, so that certainly helps too.

@Cthuluka: 泣きボクロ is a mole below one's eye ("crying mole"). Also 鬼太郎 is not "bakayarou"...
