    日本では”おがみ虫”、”祈り虫”という別名があるカマキリだけど、調べてみたら海外でも同じような呼ばれ方があるのだとか…

    Praying mantis... literally.

    By the way, in Portuguese the name of the insect is "louva-deus" (literally: god worshiper), so the religious connection is there as well.

    The same in German and most Slavic languages. A curious fact: it is masculine in Eastern Slavic languages (богомол/bogomol) and feminine in Western and Southern ones (богомолка/bogomolka/modliszka). Don't know why.
