Y'know, there's like three different 'Afterlives' that are ruled over...Hagokuro (I know that's spelled wrong, but I don't feel like looking it up) and Yuyuko, the burning hells and Orin/Utsuho/Satori, Higan and Komachi/Shikieiki...I suppose they're sort of on the way to one another (Well, Higan and Yuyuko's place, at least.) but still, there's at least three people who could 'come to carry off the dead' or considered 'Ruler of the underworld'.

And Suika's right, as a prey species, mice live with death just on the other side of a pair of claws. Just about everything bigger than them that eats meat eats them....They have a choice. Either be afraid of everything to the point of paralysis (Which will get them killed faster) or be ballsy and potentially kick ass.

I've thought of Hakugyokurou (I didn't even have to look it up... is that sad?) as a sort of much nicer Purgatory where souls wait to be ferried across the Sanzu for judgment.

Actually, I think having a third, (more potentially) unbiased party select which ones are preferable is perhaps as fair a process as we could hope to get in a situation like this.

When you die in Gensokyo, you are first ferried across the Higan by Komachi, then judged by Shikieiki.
This could have two possible outcomes:

1. You are judged to have lived a good life which means that you can go visit Yuyuko-sama and either serve and live there or achieve true enlightenment by getting cut by Youmu's sword.

2. You are judged to have lived a bad life. This means you get to visit Orin until you have atoned enough. Then finally, you get to give Yuyuko and Youmu a visit, too.

No matter how you look at this...it's better to live a bad life so you can visit them both.

Er, no, not quite. Akyuu is quite clear on this - after dying, you first cross the Sanzu River and are judged by the Yama, then you're sent somewhere based on the results of that judgement. The Netherworld (Dominic does refer to it specifically) is one of the possible destinations, but Orin and company aren't - that's the Former Hell of Blazing Fires, not the current one.

That said, it is apparently where the guiltless dead spend their time - so the mice who don't make it through this battle actually have a pretty good chance of getting there...

Also, edited Dominic's line since 冥界 is a specific place in the Touhou-verse (so he's definitely talking about Yuyuko).
