Pretty cool, in a really twisted sort of way. "Moso" - the timber bamboo seen in movies like "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" and what appears to be depicted here - can grow 100cm in a single day. Positioned over an emerging shoot like that, I fear this could get ugly.

Makes me wonder how many snuff films the artist might have seen to come up with this stuff.

He doesn't need to have seen any. This actually WAS done in medieval asia. It's just an artistic interpretation of historic fact. And an extremely hot one at that (no, I'm not a sadist mind you)

I finally figured out the whole bamboo thing under her but does this really qualify for a violence tag? There's no afterimage, as far as I remember, otherwise that would just ruin the mood for me now.

Wouldn't the bamboo shoots on either side of her just rip her arms off first?

I'm guessing the ones she's tied to have grown as tall as they'll get.

Bamboo grows fastest at its younger stages. She'll get perforated before the older bamboo gets her out of the way.

Also, I'm reminded that Mythbusters confirmed a similar method of torture.

It was still being done in the Vietnam war actually. The Vietcong would put captured American soldiers above the bamboo shoots and leave them there.
