Is this just a pairing someone came up with? (Doujinshi fodder/shipping.) Or is there actually something between Buerling and Elma in the novels? To tell the truth, when I first saw a picture involving those two, it somehow seemed 'right' to me. (A good pairing/matchup.)

From the translations I've read it seemed like there was more chemistry between Elizabeth and Tomoko, in an opposites attract sort of way. I've also seen Kathrine and Ursula together, so I guess the artists are just pairing up the remaining characters.
