Yeah, what Alixiron said. A lot of the time you just have to make assumptions (sometimes obvious like this one, sometimes more difficult) based on context if you don't wanna end up with sentences that work in Japanese but are awkward or even nonsensical in English.
The sentence may just say "Some days later, went fishing as an apology for abandoning." but we know from reading the story who it was that abandoned whom.
