audio jack

A connector commonly used for audio equipment. Sometimes called a headphone jack, jack plug, phone jack, or phone connector.

Almost all headphones, microphones and most consumer speakers have one of these connectors. Consumer equipment usually has the small 3.5 mm plug and professional equipment has the large 6.35 mm plug. Electric guitars and effects units always use the 6.35 mm plug.

Plugs have a single prong with separately connected tip, sleeve, and usually one ring, sometimes more. Mono audio has no ring, often found on microphones; stereo audio has one ring and headsets with integrated microphones or control buttons have two or more rings.
