The main antagonist of Mobile Suit Gundam and the eponymous Char's Counterattack, a supporting character in Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam and eternal rival and foe of Amuro Ray. Also appears in Gundam GQuuuuuux.
Char Aznable, also known as The Red Comet by the Earth Federation Space Forces (as he was able to destroy 5 Federation battleships with a simple red colored Zaku II in quick succession during the Battle of Loum)), is originally a blonde-haired Zeon ace pilot of the MS-06S Zaku II Commander Type, Z'Gok, Gelgoog, MSN-02 Zeong, AEUG Rick Dias, Gundam Mk II, Zero Shiki, MSN-00100 Hyaku Shiki and the Neo Zeon Char's Dijeh, Dijeh Traversia, Geara Doga Psycommu Test Type and the Prototype Sazabi/MSN-04 Sazabi/MSN-04II Nightingale.
He is usually depicted with some sort of eyewear or headwear (usually sunglasses or his trademark helmet), concealing his eyes.
His real name is Casval Rem Deikun and he has blue eyes. He stole the identity of the real Char Aznable (who is mostly identical to him except his brown eyes) to avoid being killed by Kycilia Zabi as a part of her plan to purge the Deikun family, and as such he chose to conceal his eyes to hide his real identity. He is the actual brother of Sayla Mass/Artesia Som Deikun and the true heir to Zeon.
Char's name was inspired by the real life Franco-Armenian singer and actor Charles Aznavour. In Japan Char is as well known and popular as iconic characters Darth Vader and Mr. Spock are in the West.
He is voiced by Ikeda Shuuichi.
