Having one of his battleships crippled, Rear Admiral Abe Hiroaki ordered the remainder of the Japanese fleet to withdraw, leaving Hiei attacked by B17s and Grumman TBF Avengers. Her crew was ordered to abandon ship before her escort Destroyers scuttled her.
